From Scratch:
What does it mean to make “from scratch?”

Collaboration between Eric Mosheim and Thomas Granger

Fall 2023

Trying to answer this question, Thomas and I made a chair with all materials produced at their most basic level. Such individual and, therefore, trustworthy oversight of production came with moral and carbon-positive consequences. The systems we currently use for recycling and ensuring sustainable, humane practices are unreliable. The FSC was established to create an international system for certifying sustainable lumber, but critics say it has served only to provide a cover for trafficking in illegal timber. Instead of buying wood and unknowingly supporting a timber industry with many environmental holes and shortcomings, we used recycled paper and natural adhesives to create a paper pulp that emulates the structure and durability of wood. We made our own wood from scratch.

Materials:  recycled paper, rice glue, milkweed, wool roving

model in wood (with thomas’ “from scratch” felt work)

How to: Paper Pulp

1.  recycled paper + rice glue (homemade) + water

2.  squish in mold

3.  leave out to dry4.  paper pulp!
